Vision & Challenges
- Create an app that helps preventing accidents between cars and bikes in a situation where the bike is not visible for the car-driver and gain awareness for this dangerous situation.
- Make bikers and car-drivers use the app every time they’re on the road.
- Find a way to warn the drivers of such situations without distracting them too much.
- Find a technical way to detect such situations with the help of smartphones.
Approach & Methods
After learning about the idea and goal of the product we first did some technical test about the abilities of smartphones detecting signals from other smartphones or beacons. As a result we found that phone to phone was the preferred way of communication, though it brought some challenges with it, like distance and the fact that the one who is sending a signal has to have the app open and the screen can’t be locked.
In a design sprint we created two kinds of interfaces, one for bike- and one for car-drivers so we could test the overall acceptance of the product.
Because the car-driver would be sending the signal, we also added additional features to offer a more personal reason to use the app and have it open while driving.
The test results showed a surprising acceptance on the car-driver side, but only if the personal benefit of navigation and other traffic related features would be offered as well, which upped the development cost a lot.
On the biker side it was not seen as valuable enough to have the app running in the background for every bike ride. Our assumption was that the situation is a problem in general but not enough on a personal level.
Based on the test results we proposed possible further actions to take to the client such as gaining awareness about the danger in general through marketing or looking into hardware solutions.
